osprey 250 repower
« on: January 20, 2010, 06:39:30 AM »
I am considering replacing the  twin OMC Seadrive 140's on my '89 osprey 250. Any thoughts on repowering? 1 large single versus twins: E-tec vs Yamaha 4 strokes etc... I would appreciate any comments. thanks, Terry (new member, owner of a 20' AS striker as well)

Hi

I recently changed my old rude for a suzuki Df 225.
Here a post where I explain the reasons why I chose this motor.
The fuelconsumption is 3.8. mpg at cruisingspeed 27 m/h. When trolling its less than a gallon per hour ( 1000 rpm ).
Top speed is about 43 m/h.

Advantage of twins: I one fails you have the other, so you never will have a problem to come home.

Disadvantage: More weight, more fuelconsumption and higher maintenance cost.

Hope my comments are helpful.

Regards

To maintain the balance of the hull your replacement options need to tip the scales at nearly the same weight as the I/O's.  First determine the weight of the equipment you are removing.  Second, determine how you want the outboard(s) installed; Porta-Bracket, Flotation bracket, or cut-out the transom.  If you choose a bracket, you will need the over-all weight of the the new power to be 60 to 120 pounds lighter to keep the boat balanced.  That may be hard to achieve with twin engines.  My 225 Suzuki weighs in at 460 lbs (as I recall).  Weight is major consideration and know the brackets exaggerate the affect.

Hi

Your seadrives weigh around 300 lbs each.
So you won't have problems with a big single.
I think that 200,225,and 250 4 stroke weigh the same.

Etec's are lighter, but they are 2 strokes.
