Tilt & trim motor for 200 Hp Mercury

I have a 1992 Mercury Offshore 200hp. Tilt and trim were working fine around 1 month ago. Worked just a little today as if the batteries were low(which they were a little) so I put a charge on the batteries and now it just clicks. I have a brand new battery and when I try to raise or lower it just clicks. Any ideas on what I should check?

Is it a two wire tilt/trim motor? I have the feeling that the motor is shot

I am starting to fear the worst and think it might be the motor after all. I noticed before it quit working that the motor would hardly come up, but it would go down fine. Now all it does is click for up and down. I did keep trying to get it to come up and down when it was dragging. Could I have messed it up?

Assuming that it is the motor, the boat motor is in the down position. How do I raise the motor in order to remove the trim motor? Thanks for the help!

Thanks Capt. Bob :!:   I actually posted there as well.  Most of the answers that I am getting is motor is most likely shot.  The motor won't even come on when you try to go up and down the relays just click.  If I can figure out how to manually raise the motor, I plan to straightwire the pump and see if it will come on.

Had a fishing trip lined up for this coming Tuesday.  The trim picked a great time to go out :twisted:   Typical boat I guess.  I am just baffled because I went fishing 1 month ago and the trim has always worked great and has shown no signs of problems

I had a problem with the trim on my Evinrude (engine before the current one) and I opened the box (inside the cowling on the back of the motor) that had the connections for the trim and tilt and using jumper leads, I could raise and lower the engine.  Ended up being bad connections back there. Maybe it's the same thing with yours or maybe in the controls? The switch is getting dirty?

If it's a two wire motor, just connect/jump them directly to the battery, you'll see right away if the motor is shot

About raising your motor manually, on my rude there's manual release valve screw on the starboard side of the trim/tilt unit, you unsrew it abit(DO NOT UNSCEW IT COMPLETELY) to raise it manually. I guess all outboard should have this manual release valve screw

Confirmed the motor is shot :twisted:   Need to get it off but the motor is down.  I have unscrewed the plastic screw on the left side to relieve the pressure.  Still can't lift the motor up manually.  Is there something else I am missing?

You unscrewed the wrong screw, should be a metal screw. Don't forget, that's a feavy motor. You don' have the manual ?

Metal or plastic screw on right side. Takes a large straight blade. Loosen screw, raise motor, tighten, repeat. The system will settle and the motor will drop as the trim rams fill up with fluid. Works best with two people. If you have the two wire motor, a brush kit should be available for the motor from Mercury (around $120). You will most likely have to move the right side mounting bracket (3 bolts, steering, and pivot tube nut) out from the motor to get at the trim motor. Keep us posted. Shame you're not closer to AC, NJ.

Thanks for the tip!!!  I did locate my Seloc manual and it did help some.  Looks like I know where to start now.  I do have the 2 wire motor.  One green and one blue.  I guess the pump can be re-built?  Would I just need the brushes?

It's actually a brush/plate kit. Not hard to replace. Two allen head screws hold the motor to the pump. The back screw is a pain. You may be able to clean up the brushes and armature as I did. My motor brushes were damaged thanks to a yahoo mechanic who didn't run the wires correctly and pinched them between the lower cowls. Melted the wires together nicely. Also got the digital trim sender wires too.

I just had the same issues with my trim motor and a friends.  The brushes were stuck out away from the arm and a little sanding on the arm and PB blaster and working the brushes by hand  and now they work great.  I would try this first.  If it doesn't work, let me know and I will see how good of a price for a new one that I can get for you.

I will PM you the procedure, but make sure you have a positive locking system for keeping the motor in the up position.  You don't want it fallling at the wrong moment...

Motor replacement is not a big deal - be careful and you can do it pretty easily.
