Installing a shoot-thru transducer on 98 Osprey 205
« on: July 02, 2009, 08:43:12 AM »
Guys,

I'm helping a co-worker install a Garmin 440S on his "new to him" 1998 Osprey 205.  There is a Humminbird sounder on there now, which will be removed.

I'd prefer to mount the transducer inside the bilge area, so that it shoots thru the hull, instead of on the transom.  This will save us from having to pull the boat out of the water during this super crazy holiday boating weekend in NJ.

I am going thru the install instructions in the manual before installing the unit (crazy I know, but that's what I'm doing), and the manual says that this method can only work on a boat that is solid glass, and not cored.  So, my question to all of you, is this boat cored or not?  I don't think that it is, but in my searching around, I couldn't tell.

Thanks for any and all answers.

The hull is more than likely solid fiberglass.  What kind of access do you have to the bilge?  Do you have any pictures?  Being a later model, this is probably a good question for SeaBob...

You always need to test a shoot-thru transducer - a small air gap/pocket in the glass can cause problems.  Humminbird has a good set of instructions online at:
