Motor set up for the 222 & 170
« on: July 28, 2005, 06:42:22 AM »
I am getting ready to swap out motors on my 1972 222 flat back. the johnson 130 was set with the cavatation plate 1" below the bottom. I know this was under powered and I got alot of cavitatiion getting up on plane.  I also got a lot of spray from the motor with this set up. I was told to set the 200's plate even with the bottom. whats the consences out there on this.

also the person I sold my 130 to has a 170 and his 115 on it now was set 1" above the bottom. should we set his new 130 the same or even with the bottom.

I think you  mean "a 115 on his 170".
My 170 has a Mariner 115 with the cavitation plate set in line with the bottom.  I donĀ“t have any spray or cavitation problems with my setup.
I would think the same will be true for the 130, being a slightly heavier engine.  I guess he has to install and try.

thanks we will try the even with the bottom set on the 170. we are using a set of hijacker brackets to mount the 130 becouse it is a 25" shaft and the 170 has the 20" transom. I don't think that will make a difference, the brackets only off set the motor back 4" from the transom.

Sounds good.  Let me know how it works when you run it.
I imagine that with a 130, that boat will hit 42-44mph....It would be nice to see some figures.  Mine hits 38mph at WOT.
