I'm looking to bring back an old boat and I found this site, and an 19ft Aquasport built in 1987. I fished the same boat for years which my buddy had, and loved the boat. This boat is beat up, but appears to have a solid hull. I did find near the stern bilge pump a two foot section of foam that was lightly glassed over. My concern is that the block of foam is a broken off piece of a stringer. looking into the stern of the bilge, there is one block of foam on the star port side of the bilge pump that is solid and glassed to the hull. To the port side of the pump is where I found this free piece of foam. Do you think I should run from this a start looking somewhere else or is this not a big problem to deal with.

Ok I Will do some recon and take a few pics when I look at the boat again. Do you know if the stringers were wood or a foam core that year.
Thanks Rich Stemming

The only thing that was wood in the older boats was the transoms and the sole material (end-core balsa covered in glass).

Thanks Rick for the reply. I will try to post the pics friday. You said there was balsa core in the older boats. Where did they use balsa core in their boats.

Rickk is saying the sole( or deck or floor) was made out of end core balsa. It was then encapsulated in glass. I think the transom was probably marine plywood again coated in glass. I could be wrong about the transom and I'm sure someone who does know will chime in.

I just opened up the transom on my 1976 19'. I've got two sheets of 3/4 plywood with fiberglass inbetween the sheets. It does not look like its marine grade but it definitely need to be replace. The transom wasn't rotted but it held a ton of water.
