Transom Replacement for 1973 19'6 Aquasport
« on: June 23, 2009, 11:19:22 PM »
Just had the transom checked on the boat and found that it needs to be replaced...

Would you close the transom or replace the original? Also, what would a ballpark cost be for both options?

I live in Florida.. Any recommendations on someone who could do the work is greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

Cole

I thought you had said the boat was fully restored?

Just my $0.02, but I wouldn't close the transom, although it would look nice.  You'd have to add a bracket, and that would add more stress to the new transom.

I'm guessing you have a 20" Shaft yammer on there now, so obviously the easiest thing to do would be to rebuild the transom at 20".  I didn't "rebuild" my transom because it was solid to begin with, but I raised it another 5" to accomodate the new O/B.  If you ever decide to resell the boat, potential buyers would like the raised transom and 25" O/B, at least thats what a man who's loins I happen to come from told me.  The extra 5" sure is nice in a following sea... feels much safer.

It turns out the previous owner had been told the transom was redone... However, they only did the upper half of the transom and finished it off... The transom lacks support and was not tied into the stringers and would flex when pushed on... The transom was built up 5 inches from the original cutout for the motor... The F115 is a 25 inch shaft...

Everything has been worked out... Hammerhead in Tampa is going to do the work... We are leaning toward closing the transom and adding a Porta-bracket...

Won't that seriously bury your scuppers?

Have you considered using Seacast?   Worked great for me, and was both economical and relatively easy:
