That must be a feature for the inboard and i/o 222's. I don't ever recall seeing a bilge pump in an original o/b 222.

I have one in mine and somebody else replaced it with what appears to be HD garden hose. I don't use it as a fish box but rather for anchor and life jacket storage.

My 1983 222 has the thru hull fitting. It was used to drain the above deck fish box. I removed the above deck box so there is no need for it.
When I rebuilt my front deck I enlarge the below deck fish box and insulated it with foam so I could carry five - five gallon buckets of shark chum. I located a pump below a deck plate I installed in front of the console and utilized the old thru hull fitting. This made it possable to pump out the box. I must admitt I very rarely use the pump since I found no need to put ice in with the chum buckets, they stay plenty solid.
The original set up drained the box into the bilge.
By the way there is room between the stringers in front of the console for a spare fuel tank. I put a 28 gallon reserve tank there. The forward weight seems to help preformance.
