1989 22-2 ccp 2000 200 johnson ocean pro ?'s
« on: April 30, 2009, 07:35:52 PM »
Hey All,
First time doing this post stuff. grew up in Ft lauderdale all my friends had the boats all I did was pay for gas, bait and beer.  At 48 and near Ft pierce i'm ready to buy a boat. Getting ready to be a first time boat owner.  i think i've come across a great deal but was sent here to gather info before i buy.  The boat is a 1989 22.2 ccp with a 2000 200 johnson ocean pro which has carbs my understanding is that  it is a good strong outboard supposedly has a couple hundred hours on it. i'm going to have a marine mechanic check the compression and lower unit and whatever eles they get paid for  to give me a recommendation.  the hull looks garage kept or completely refurbed. any thoughts on the hull positive or negative. and info on the motor would be helpful too.

Jeez Bob, you just can't seem to pass up an opportunity to poke fun at 19-6 owners, even on a thread that's not even about the 19-6 design afterthought (200 CCP).   :)

Just a joke, take note of the smiley  :eye:

The 19-6 crowd ain't so bad.
It's those rowdy 170 owners that are always causin' the heartburn on this site. :thumright:

Come to think of it, they have been strangely quiet lately.
Must be fishin' a lot.

Hopefully they are fishing-  I know I've been out every weekend since the beginning of March.  The weather here has been extremely nice: upper 80's, wind 5-10knots max, seas 2-4 feet tops.  Hell- I took my 19-6 30 miles out last weekend and plan to do it again this weekend.  Figure I better take advantage of this mild weather before I have to be in a CCP just to be in the harbor  :D

Looking for any info that might be of value before a purchase, besides the ordinary on either the hull or motor would be appreciated.  I'm green as to boat purchases. Was sent to this site to get some info, already planning to get a omc certified mech to check compression and whatever else they check for the cash on the motor.

Sorry Tom - We got kinda distracted by Aquasport Model Rivalry -

Where do you think you'll be using the boat the most?  Inshore?  Offshore?  If offshore, a CCP would be a good choice.

Some things to check on the boat- The transom.  Trim the motor up and really try to move it up or down yourself- does the transom flex?

Walk all around the boat and try to find any soft spots, which is a sign of rot .

Check everything out-  Electronics: do they work?  Steering:  does it seem overly stiff?

Look at the hull-  any obvious gouges or areas of damage?  (ie. exposed fiberglass, cracks)

Check out the trailer-  any excessive rust?  how much tread on the tires?  working lights?  working brakes (if equipped)?

Above all, run the boat before you buy it, see if you like the layout and how it performs, then when you get back to the landing, check to see if it's taken on an excessive amount of water in the bilge, which can be something serious that has to be fixed.

All those things can add/subtract from the value of the boat, so that's some things to consider when negotiating the price.

These are just basic things to look for when purchasing any used boat.  I don't own a CCP, so I'm not sure of any special problems they may have, but I'm sure some owners will chime in.

Do you have any pics of the boat?

Since you are in Ft Pierce are you going offshore mostly? If you are, myself I would get a bigger boat. I have seen Sabastian inlet really bad! If you are fishing the Indian river mostly you should be fine. The only thing with the CCP is the deeper deadrise so that might limit how shallow you can go.The good thing about the motor is you can still get parts quite easily. If your compression is ok just run it. I would be more worried about something wrong with the lower unit than anything else. Of course there is a guy on ebay you can get a rebuilt lower unit for about a thousand.

Thanks a million,  looks like a great checklist it will definitely keep me focused on the priorities. I do have pics still trying to figure out how to get them into photo gallery, i've read the post on adding pics its says to go to photo gallery, members galleries, then click on the upload button in upper left hand corner i have no upload button available. I see the problem when i go to photo gallery I'm not logged in then when i try to login a screen appears that say invalid user name.
