1976 Aquasport 170
« on: March 26, 2009, 05:19:34 PM »
I just bought a mostly rebuilt '76 170 CC. The title on the boat says Cruiser's Yachts, but although there are no markings on the hull, it is without a doubt an Aquasport. Was this the name of the company who was producing them at this time or is the boat just titled incorrectly?

Welcome aboard AJ168  :!:  :!:
Aquasport was the company back then out of Hialeah, FL - look at the starboard rear of the transom and tell us what letter/numbers are on the hull up near the top.

There are actually no visible tags or even a HIN on the hull. It could be that the HIN has gotten painted over. I tried looking for a little bump where it should be, but there is nothing.

Don't look for a tab or plate, the HIN is stamped into the hull itself.

I realized why there may not be a HIN. The transom has been replaced by the previous owner. Is there any other way to tell?

I would say that somewhere along the way a title was lost and a new one made or the wrong title was applied to your hull.
Post some pics and let us see her.

Yup, that's an Aquasport 170 for sure, looks kind of cool with the high bow rail, I like it :) makes it look sea worthy

Nice boat, same motor as mine. Do you have any pics at the side of the boat, port or starboard ?

What RPM does your engine idle at? Mine idles at 1000 in water in gear. I think that's a little too quick because in neutral it idles at 1200. The adjustments are actually as far down as they go too.

The engine is a 1984. The black knob to adjust the linkage is all the way down as far as it can go. The carb butterflys aren't being touched, and the timing seems to be as far back as it can go. The only thing I can think of that would cause the engine to run fast would be a vacuum leak, but I would expect the motor to loose power at high speed, which it doesn't.

No I believe that 1984 was just about when OMC was starting to add VRO to the smaller engines.

The throttle cable seems to be Ok, and if there were an air leak somewhere, I would have expected problems at higher rpms, such as the engine bogging down and loosing power.
