Fuel tank questions
« on: August 20, 2009, 04:31:30 PM »
I have to replace the fuel tank on my 1981 Aquasport 20WA, I believe it's 73 gallons, a little difficult to read the tag . I have looked at the Moeller web site hoping to replace it with a poly tank. They have a 73 gallon O.E. tank?  I am trying to find out if this is a direct replacement . If anyone has any info it would be appreciated. I would like to buy the tank before I take out  the seats and tank cover.

Gman,
I just replaced the tank in my 81 walk around with an aluminum tank.  Do a search for my postings and you can see the pics of how I did it.  Your tank is a 73-75 gallon tank depending on who you talk to.  The measurements are 72" long x 24" wide on top 20" wide on the bottom x 11" tall. Kind of a wedge shape.  The general rule of thumb is about $10.00- $12.00 per gallon for an aluminum tank.  RDS aluminum in Perry FL (they built your tank under another name) quoted me $751.00 including shipping.  I could not find a direct poly replacement from Moeller however I think they had a 40 or 50 gallon modle that may have fit in the "coffin".

I heard of a man here in Clearwater that had a NOS Aquasport tank.  I'm not sure if is the right one but I'll try to find out.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Try Rayco Mfg in Bradenton (941) 751-3177.  They did one for me 9 months ago for about $9 a gallon.

I got a tank for my 170 from Phil at Alloy Metal Works.  Excellent workmanship, quick shipping and a great price.  I live in the Bradenton/Sarasota area and I could not find anyone that could touch his price.

RDS aluminum finished my tank in a week.  I've got to call them this afternoon to have it shipped down.  I was going to go get it but the gas to get there and back will cost more than shipping.

GMAN, there was a recent thread on aluminum vs poly.  I had a post with a link to an artilce on enclosed poly tanks.  As I recall you may not be Coast Guard approved with a poly tank. Even Moeller mentioned the release of fumes from their poly.  Check it out.

All builders have to configure fuel tank spaces to accomodate "permeation", or fume emanation through the walls of the tank.

We use Inca Poly tanks on all sizes up to about 100 gallons, after which we have RDS make aluminum tanks for us.  You should be good to go on a poly replacement tank.  Your average on the water coastie has no idea about the compartment dimensions to accomodate permeation, and wouldn't probably have the first notion how to go about determining the proper compartment size.

Hope I haven't pissed off any Coasties here... :?
