Yamaha digital gauges

I need help. I installed the digital gauges that came with the motor I put on the boat -- a Yamaha ... but I cannot get the speedometer to work. The Tach -- which is faint I can read and the analog hour meter work. However the speedometer is blank. Both speedometers don't turn on or show anything. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

What year motor? I don't remember how to adjust the contrast (brightness) of the displays. You have the power connections correct, right? Tach uses 3 wires (ground, back up, and power) and the speedo use 2 wires (ground and power). You can power them up out of the boat (carefully), if they don't come on well....... you get the idea.
