Design Question?
« on: February 19, 2009, 06:13:59 PM »
How were the 1988 Aquasports (222 in particular) built? Do they have alot of wood in them? Was there any major issues with production that year?

Thanks!

Hull has wood in transom and floor, no issues I am aware of.  Plenty still running around.

I believe by 1988 the Aquasport line was wood-free (or at least that is what they advertised).  Earlier ones had wood in transoms and under decks.

Hope this helps - see ya on the water!

GF - really?  I trust you on the later models - I really did think they were wood up until the early 90s?

Take his word on the newer hulls - I would.

Advertisment is, well, advertisement!  Aquasport pushed the fact that stringers were all fiberglass, but if you look carefully at the ad from 87-88, you will note the deck and transom look like wood - brown color - and the transom says "sealed" - not composite or solid fiberglass.  Check it out:

So there's some wiggle room there.  All I know is that my 80 model CCP has wood under some deck areas and in the transom.  Although AS advertised a no-wood boat at times, I'm not sure exactly when wood went away from the transom and some deck areas.  Maybe SeaBob knows...

Regarding wood, remember, I had a classic Cris-Craft Constellation - 6 tons of Mahogany - and kept her 20 years, so some wood is not a big deal for me - just take care of it and it will take care of you, and ain't nothing that's prettier than a nice piece of finished, quality wood!

See ya on the water!

My '92 230 has a wood transom.  Not sure what the sole is made of. End-grain Balsa?

SeaBob said earlier that they poured all the transoms when he was there. So it must have started around '94.

My 1988 222-CCP had a wood transom (2 pieces of 3/4" poorly laminated together) and the wood puzzle piece cored deck. The transom is now composite bluewater board (1-1/2"). First chance I get the floor will be Coosa board as well.
