Cant find a tank
« on: February 10, 2009, 08:01:06 PM »
Like a few other people here im finally going to replace the fuel tank in my 87 osprey170. Im also going to rewire everything the last owner did away with all fuses not sure how it all worked really, but it did. Anywho I have the old aluminum tank out and my problem is I cant find a replacement I was planing on putting in a plastic tank but no luck finding one small enough larger than 14 gal, my tank measures 50"L 20"W and 6"H has to be more than 14 gal Right? If you know where I can find a tank please let me know I hate seeing my boat in pieces. Any places in tampa maybe? Thanks.

Your tank is 25.9 gallons with those measurments.  The basic volume calc for that is L x W x H  (in inches) divided by 231

..

I had Specialty Fabrication over in Highland City, FL make a 60 gal tank for me out of 5052 marine grade aluminum for my 1990 Osprey. He did a excellent job for me and I got a custom tank for my coffin for $ 600.00. I could have probably negotiated for a little less...

Talk to Shannon at Specialty Fabrication (863)-528-7797 and he'll be happy to work with you and will produce a fine finished product. He runs a clean, well-equipped small shop....and he's reliable.

If its anything like my tank its not square in cross-section; my tank is wider at the top and tapers to fit the coffin at the bottom. Its shaped like a squared-off "U".....so the volume calculation would be somewhat different....

Rebell - that's about the going price - might be a little on the high end.  I think I paid about $400 for mine, 63 gallon.  Came from RDS in Perry, FL.

I just replaced mine.  Be very carefull with the dimensions, because you have to be able to install the hoses and leave about 1/4" at the bottom for support strips.  In my case (1985 170 osprey), the largest I could go was (outside dimensions):
length 57.5 in
width 20.5 in
height 6-1/8"
I checked and rechecked all measurements in the tank tub before fabrication and it fit perfectly when I got it.
The tub is about 8.5 inches deep only and you have to be able to put the deck panel afterwards without having it seat on top of the fill or vent fittings.
I went with 1/8" thick marine grade aluminum.

I wonder how much shipping would cost from that distance? The best price ive found for a custom aluminum around town is 600, I think I can get one cheaper. Until I find one I got alot of work on the electric it was all hacked I started looking at trying to figure it out and relized it would be best to start from scratch. Thanks for all the replies so far.
