Paint choice
« on: January 12, 2009, 04:37:52 PM »
Hey guys I got the floor problem figured out that I spoke of in a previous post. Now I need some opinions on my choice of paint. I really liked the color that Undertow used on his boat but Im sure I can only get that color in that particular brand of paint. It was called bahia honda green. I have painted a boat with awlgrip and got decent results but it wasnt the best shine in the world. With that being said, what would you guys recommend I use for the best results but doesnt take a pro to use. I have access to a paint booth to help in doing a better job, so any info is appreciated.  Would I be better spraying gel coat or paint? Thanks, RC

I would go with Interlux Single Part Polyurethane.

I am currently using the stuff doing roll and tip with a foam roller and a china bristle brush.

At around 75F or so the stuff flows out from the foam roller and settles in almost like glass. You would never guess that it isn't a sprayed finish unless you looked real close.

You can get it pretty cheap at http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/ or maybe even cheaper at  http://www.wholesalemarine.com/. I bought a gallon of PrimeKote, a gallon of Brightsides ( blue-glo white ), a quart of texture beads, a quart of gloss reducer, and a quart of brushing thinner for under $ 225.00 shipped from Jamestown Distributors.

You may want to get your paint, primer, texture beads, etc at Lowes   ...... Rustoleum has entered the Marine paint arena with their own line of single-part polyurethane finishes and I was amazed to see how cost effective they are as compared to everything else. If I do a smaller boat anytime soon I might just give the ole' Rustoleum product line a try

Good luck with your project !

I have shot both Awlgrip and Imron, and IMO Awlgrip is the way to go.  Just don't lay it on too thick or it will sag.  You have to TRY to make it orange peel by laying it on way thin...

When you shto it before, did you have a high quality drier on your air supply?  I use a commercial drier in addition to a disposable trap at the gun.  Clean air supply and a clean, functioning gun are key.

Search for it on here, its been discussed quite a few times. There's pros and cons to both.

Lil Richard, I didnt have a drier. Im assuming that is the same as a water seperater. Im sute that was my problem. I think I have decided on the Bahia Honda Green and Im not sure the brand of paint, I think it might be dupont but the application methods should be close to the same. If not, I will use awlgrip if thats what the majority says is the best. Also as mentioned on shooting the desk, I guess I would just use a flattening agent so its not as shiny, Would that be correct? Thanks, RC

Hi , was wondering how your paint job came out,
I myself was going to use Awlgrip polyurethane gloss on my 1982 20ft Aquasport.
Planned on prepping and then use a fine foam roller.
Had great results using the foam roller and the poly urethane awlgrip has a nice
looking finish.
Regards,
Jess

My one additional thought on paint (I know RC has already made up his mind, this is for anyone else interested):

if you're going to paint, use a two part paint like Awlgrip, Imron, Perfection, etc.  I would steer clear of single stage paints because they do not dry as hard, and do not hold up as well.  Professionals use 2 part paints for a reason!

I totally agree wtih you LilRichard. A two part paint is definitley the way to go. Insignia Marine Coatings is who I am going with. They seem to be pretty ligit in the market. Check them out, INSIGNIA COATINGS on google. PREP, PREP, PREP When will it be over?

I totally agree with Interlux Single Part Polyurethane.  Very easy to get a good quality "10 foot away and she's perfect" job done.  Nice easy flow to the product, ample time for tipping.  You must use 2 thin coats and sand in between.

That said I would stay far away from the Rustoleum topsides paint.  I tried everything to get that stuff to flow and it just wouldn't.  It was barely better than painting with Elmer's Glue!  The blue in my boat is Interlux and the white is all Rustoleum.  I wish I had spent the extra dollars and gone all Interlux.
