CLEANING ADVICE....
« on: January 29, 2009, 11:11:21 AM »
HEY GUYS!! I decided it was time for my annual cleaning of my 89 170 striper.(i know that i should keep her clean all the time but i keep her at a storage preventing me to clean and wash her down every week.) So anyways I started cleaning her....the problem I ran into was getting the black skuff marks from off the floor and sides of the inside of the boat(most of the skuff marks are from shoes). If you guys know about a strong cleaner that'll work all the advice is appreciated!!! thanks in advance guys!! also I know i haven't posted in a while so here's a few pics...get some!!!

Soft Scrub with bleach.

Be aware, it's abrasive so go easy.

Try acetone on those scuff marks.

It works well.

Bon Ami and Barkeepers Friend work very well for cleaning gelcoat.  Both are non-abrasive and will not damage or 'scratch' a gelcoat finish like the abrasive cleaners (Ajax, Comet, etc.) will.

BF has a small amount of either oxalic or muriatic acid - both relatively mild cleaning agents.  BF does a better job of removing stains from gelcoat.  Most of the larger grocery stores, Walmart, Target and the like carry both in the section with cleansers.  They're cheap, too.

A LIGHT rubbing compound also works well to remove surface marks along with the cleaners suggested by Capt. Bob and RebelYell - sooner or later all of 'em will end up in you boat cleaning arsenal.

By the way - nice looking 170 - supper looks good, too!

Black soled shoes and Cheetos are the first no-nos that pop into my mind.

Nice boat.

What do you have in her that keeps it listing to starboard at rest? 2 batteries on that side in the back? I would think that you'd have the batteries under the console in that year boat.

well......i do have batteries in the console....i have a total of 3.....i run a 24volt 82 lb thrust motor guide which requires two....but the suzuki is a 115....i would say it's slightly on the heavier side(probably the cause).......fulltank of gas might be a factor as well.......oh and did i mention the 24pack in the cooler seat. 8)

I have a 115 on my 170 also and she sits a little low in the back too.  But she doesn't list to one side or the other (unless I'm in it    ).

Everything else you mentioned is in the center-line of the boat - not on one side. Do you notice how it is listing to the starboard side with no one in it?  Portable Livewell?  Does she take on water?
Not trying to freak you out - just trying to figure out what I'm seeing. Maybe it's an illusion
