Hello New guy here, need a little help
« on: November 16, 2008, 09:59:58 AM »
Hi
My name is Rick and I am from NJ.

I am thing of buying a 1988 Aquasport 222 Express Fisherman.
The engine is no good, but a have found a 225 Hp Evinrude for her.
The boat comes with a trailer and looks to be in good shape.
I was wondering if anyone knows what this boat is worth when I put the engine on it.

I think it’s a good deal and just want to know what everyone else thinks.

I can get the boat and trailer for $2500.00 and the engine for another $2500.00
So I am at $5000.00 before I find anything wrong. $5000.00 for this doesn’t sound bad to me, what do you think?

Thanks for the help
Rick

Hi Rick,
If the hull is structurally sound (transom, sole/floor, stringers) and the trailer is in good/usable condition, $2500 for the pair seems to be at least a fair - maybe better than fair - price for the pair.  If major work is needed, different story.

Same for the replacement motor.  Hard to say without knowing year, hours, original or rebuild, leak down/compression/lower unit pressure check results, etc.  Controls from the Evinrude 175 on it in the photo should work with a 225hp 2-stroke replacement.  Are rigging cost & prop included in the $2500?

As far as what it's worth, it's worth what someone will pay - especially in this market.  But if...if... you know the motor is strong and the hull is sound, that's a nice rig for five grand.  I bought the same hull ('86 model in a center console version) earlier this year and really like it so far.  Some things could have been done differently, but the same could be said with almost any hull.  That walkaround sure looks good in the photo.

Best of luck and post some more pictures.  Tell us how it works out.

Welcome aboard Rick C  :!:  :!:
The boat looks to be in decent shape.  Price isn't bad either.
If she's been in the water most of her life I'd definitely poke around the bilge and spend some time investigating her transom.  You should be able to look in the bilge both in the aft and inside the cabin - should be an inspection plate in the floor in the cabin.  Should be a bilge pump in the front as well as the aft.
Bounce up and down on the motor while trimmed up and look at the transom for flexing.  I would bring a rubber mallet to tap on the transom listening for different sounds. Maybe even bring a socket and tap on the transom listening along the way.
If these things look good to you I think you'll like the boat - plenty of room in the cockpit, like the room I have in my 230.  A 225 should push her about 40 mph.

Again, welcome aboard  8)
