Troling Motor
« on: November 05, 2008, 06:46:48 PM »
This question has probally been asked before but im looking for a troling motor to fit my 170. Anybody know what shaft lenght and lbs thrust would be suitable. Ive never needed a bow mount motor before so im not realy sure what to measure or if the lip on the front bow is in the way and needs to be modified. Thank for any ideas.

I have a Minn Kota 74lb on my 17.  I believe it is a 52 inch shaft.  I was going to go with a 55 but I am glad I went with the 74 and 24v system.  It will help out if you are fishing in strong wind or current and it will last all day.

If you have an option, go with a foot-controlled motor.  I used to have a foot-control troll motor on a 17' Key West and it was grrreat like frosted flakes.  It took a little getting used to, but it leaves you free to fish/smoke/drink with two hands.  I don't think you necessarily need a 24V system on a boat that size, but it sure is much nicer.

For some stupid reason, I opted for a hand control on my 19-6, and I have to say, I hate it.  I basically have to kneel down on the bow to use it.  It's better than having no troll motor, but foot-control is definitely the way to go.
