my first post
« on: October 23, 2008, 06:52:28 PM »
This is my first post.I am a local fishing guide in tampa born and raised.I like my boat a lot and personally rebuilt  it myself the only pictures I have of it right now is on my site at www.tailingtales.com. I enjoy reading the questions and answers that people give and can give great advice to anyone thinking or doing a project.I use my boat between 150-200 days a year and the boat is 1 year old.Fishing has been great lots of snook and lots of redfish when they decide to show themselves. They are like houdini.
We probably only have another 2-3 weeks of good tarpon fishing left if this weather cooperates.

proud to see the 222 is being put to good use! I love fishing on mine, plenty of deckspace and easy to go where other boats cannot

yours looks extremely custom-built to me haha, I like the front casting platform. The tower is also cool as well!

Kris,
You weren't up in the Homosassa/Crystal River area 1-2 days ago, were you?  You got a 200 Yamaha on her, pull her with a Chevy SUV?  I think I passed you on 19, heading back south.

Someone's got a boat that looks a lot like yours.  Can you post some photos on photobucket?

Worked for Wellcraft for 6 years, '94-'00, lived at BayWest apts. on Manatee Ave W just shy of 75th. Waded Palma Sola, Manatee River, Ringling Flats, Anna Maria.  How is the Bay doing?  Been hanging around there for 40 years.

Kris,
No :*:.  I'm now an engineer with Proline.  We are set to shut down from Thanksgiving until Jan 5.  Can't wait for Nov 4.  Aquasport no longer.  Wellcraft in Michigan and Tennessee.  We keep our fingers crossed.

Hey, according to my two old buddies, now at Donzi, there is a deep hole to the north of the Ringling Causeway coming out of downtown Sarasota going towards St. Armands that holds a big Jewfish.  Right, more or less, at the foot of the bridge, maybe 3-4 supports away from shore.  They were divers, and claimed to have seen it.  Know anything?  That would be a lot of fun!

Allright, next up.  Longboat Pass, strong tide, slow jig with a shrimp for snook.  Incoming tide, east side of the bridge.  Lift and drop.  Slow retrieve.  This weekend would be good.  Let the front/crap get out of the way.  Probably Sunday.  Used to be able to anchor outside the channel either side under the bridge, snook on every cast and retrieve.

What's this about?

BTW, why don't you come down to the gathering on the 8th?  If you pull up in a Proline - oh well (strikeout will be in his too).  If you don't have a boat, let us know and we can probably have someone pick you up from a close-by spot and take you out to the island.

Rick,
I believe after the elections, we'll see some economic movement as I think everyone is sitting on their hands right now waiting for the changes that will come, whether they agree with them or not.

Now of course everyone here is painfully aware of the demise of AS from Genmar's stable of boat lines.  I don't agree with them that it was a matter of competition between their other similar products, i.e. Wellcraft and Hydra-Sports.  I think each line had a particular market and served that market well.

The closing of the Wellcraft plant really hit a lot of us in the industry hard as a lot of good boat building talent spent some time there at one point or another.  Our CFO and our Accounts payable people, our head buyer, our marketing director, all ex-Wellcraft/AS.  Bob Long, Todd Biddeson, and Sidney Lanier, the braintrust behind Marine Concepts, ex-Wellcraft/AS.  Not to mention all the boat builders themselves, the one's who actually gave you the product you so thoroughly enjoy.  All gone.  Old 301 and Whitfield Ave. wasn't exactly the nicest neighborhood, but it was "home" for quite some time.  Plus, when you got off work, head west on Whitfield, cross Tamiami Trail, go to the end where it deadends at the bay, and you were fishing in 8 minutes!  Always good trout fishing on those flats.

Don't know about the gathering on the 8th.  Have to check with the wife.  I'd love to be there, though.  My personal favorite?  Late 90s 250 Osprey.  She'd hit low 50s with twin 150s, but I'd throw a pair of 200 H.O. Etecs on her.  She can handle them, probably see about 56-58 top bop, and the H.O.'s have the bigger block so your holeshot and mid-range accel. is better.
