T-Top weight
« on: May 09, 2005, 10:58:01 AM »
:D Hi guys,
I got lucky this weekend, I was able to pick up a T-Top for my 19.6 CC. It came of a 18 ft Whaler Guardian. However, it has a hardtop, and a large electronics box. This box is quite heavy since it is really the entire support of the roof. I wonder what the influence would be with the top weight, could it be dangerous? Maybe one of the tower guys has any input, those things are top heavy too right?
Overall it is a very nice top, I also wonder if ( and how) I should reinforce the floor, I have a new floor in the boat and it is unfinished, so I could modify easily. Any help is appreciated.
19.6 CC, T-Top, 115 HP Johnson 4 stroke, Continental All. Float on.

Having worked on many boats with tops and towers., I will give you my opinion. Take it for what you will.

Firstly (and foremost) the t-top or tower needs to have a great deal of support. Double the thickness of the regular deck area, and thru bolt. The top should have a MINIMUM of 2-4 connections to the console for additional support. Be careful to consider pull tubes for mounting additional electronic devices like an anchor light (required), spreader lights, and antenna mounts plus the cable pulls required for all of the above. If at all possible, pull all cables for any and all options you want to put on the T-TOP before you intsall it. Ther are MANY applications where the tubes are welded too close with too small of holes between the pipes where I cannot drag wire. It may seem like a minor issue now, but it becomes a big issue when you want to keep a clean install going and mount things.
