Fuel Tank's
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:46:27 PM »
My 87 250 ccp has twin 103 gal tanks both have quite a bit of exterior surface rust and look like they need to be replaced.  Looking at repowering with Suzuki DF300.  Do I really need fuel capacity of 206 gal.

Thanks

Just like horsepower, you can never have too much fuel especially with 300 ponies.

I think you'll find that what you really need to worry about is the bottom of the tanks (alum pitting).

Good luck

it all depends on how far you wanna bring 'er. I imagine around 100-150 gallons would suit most voyages with that new suzuki. Best to replace tanks while you can, mine started to cause problems and I am lucky it did not leak. Mount the tank properly where it will not be in sustained contact with water.

And to put it in perspective, my gas guzzling two stroke 140hp v4 (1987) lasts me an entire day on the water with just under 25 gallons of gas. Not only is your engine newer, its a four stroke = more efficient. (Yes I know its 160hp more but fuel technology is advancing.

Tip: As long as your engine specifically says not to or told elsewise by a professional, use special fuel additive purchaseable at local marine stores. (I use Startron Enzyme) It helps the engine deal with the ethanol really well, increases performance and mileage, and keeps your tanks and lines clean. It will help you in the long run and keep your engine running well for years to come.
