Anyone know what year our 222 flatback was built?
« on: July 11, 2008, 06:30:32 PM »
She's been in our family since 1987, and we always thought she was built in 1964 - but that's unlikely. We have to part with her (after 21 years!), and I'd love to know her birthdate so I don't sound like an idiot or a scammer:

HIN?

Got a Hull Id Number from the registration?

If not, how about some pictures of the bow and stern out of the water?  We could probably get it within a range of dates with pics...

hull number DMMRVH623147301

And here's the bow:

The registration has the boat as 1969 - but that was just my guess at the time...

Okay - my husband says the reason we don't have the standard hull number is because it would have been on the original transom - and ours was replaced. So it's still a mystery...

Flatback

OK, I vote for 22-2 Center Console (Flatback), vintage 67-71, but would be interested in what some of the flatback owners think.   :?:

I notice it is missing the side badges and does not have the green rubrail.

Check out this in the Aquasport Resource section: http://www.classicaquasport.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2527&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

Rick has a link to decode the HIN. Maybe this will help.

HIN

Looks like a non-standard HIN - not sure whether decode would work.  It would likely decode as a 73, but I think it's earlier than that, as I don't think any flatbacks were built with a 1973 HIN.   Note that HINs were only required after 1972, so earlier boats may not have one.  Most flatbacks were pre-72.

Original MIC (1st 3 letters of HIN) for Aquasport was ASP, then OUA in 1988, then AQA in 1990.  DMM is for Del-Mar Marine of Cape Coral, Florida, in business from 1990 to 1999.

BTW - ASP has now been picked up by a canoe importer (!)

Hope this helps!

Thanks, everyone!
My husband says the non-standard HIN is a result of the transom rebuild - the old number was removed. We have the busted badging - it was raised lettering, not stickers. The black rubrail was there when we got her ('87), so I'm not sure if it's original.

Looks to have the same prow lines as this boat which is listed as a '68.  Both are nice looking boats.

I saw that one - gorgeous!
That's the funny thing about these boats - they spoil you for all others. Because there's a part of me that's thinking we could finish that guy's rebuild, use our totally reliable Merc 115 to power her, etc etc...
Of course that wouldn't solve our current problem (the boat is actually too big and powerful for use as a loaner for our summer tenants, and our insurance company wants us to downsize).
But we can dream, can't we?

There's a decent-looking 170 donation boat on eBay going cheap if you want to downsize and keep an Aquasport fleet:

I'd love that 170. But we're way up here in NY/CT, and I think it's probably still too much boat for us right now.

I put ours up on Ebay as a '68 (thanks to all for the sleuthing!!). Also, turns out our trailer is a 2001!
Here's the listing:
