fuel odor question

Hello All!

I am new to the website and I am impressed with some of these restorations!  Some of you have some serious talent.  I have an 85' 222ccp.  This will be my 4th season.  I love it!

I have a question however.  I have a gas smell under deck that comes and goes.  I opened the inspection hatch near the motor and water tank.  I can see the bilge pump resting on the hull of the boat.  There is a second black (and rusty) metal pump with two wires (black and red) attached to the gas tank.  I think the odor is coming from this pump?  Is this a fuel pump?  How and where would I get this replacement.  And is it even functioning?

First off, welcome to the world's best place for CCP owners. There are a "handful" of 170 owners here too but they're harmless

That stated, on my CCP (84) there are several "inspection" or access plates. The one closest to the motor is where my bilge pump is located. I cannot "see' my fuel tank from this plate. There is another plate foward that resides between the "false " transom and the console. When removed, I can see the tank. There is another underneeth the center console that allows access to the tank fuel gauge sending unit.

This leads to the cruel but necessary statement, this post is worthless without pics, (meaning yours).

The device you talk about may be a fuel pump but without the pics it's hard to tell. I'm not sure that electric fuel pumps were a factory option.The gas smell is common for our boats when they reach this age. It may indicate that corrosion is occuring on the tank bottom allowing a slight leak or in fact, the device you allude to, is the sorce.

Chris - welcome to the site!  Where is this pump?  The gas tank on CCPs is in a tub under the center panel that runs up under the console.  

Is the deck hatch in the picture just behind the console or toward the stern?  Where do the hoses go?  This pump could just be a livewell pump that is no longer operable.

That looks like the livewell pump (mine was missing). The access plate edge is cut off just like mine so I'm guessing we are looking down the hole just in front of the well and the walk through. It would be between the two battery (factory location) boxes.

If this is true, then this pump probably circulated water in the livewell. I don't believe they came with fuel pumps but someone may have installed one at this point.
GF is refering to the same area as I did concerning the fuel smell. These tanks are notorious for corrosion forming under the foam that was used to buffer the tie down straps for the tank. Your age CCP will be suffering from this disease (I would bet the ranch on it) if it is the original factory tank. As DF noted, you would be wise to pull the tank and inspect.

My 84 fell prey to this 10 years ago and many members who have rebuilt these craft have noted the same corrosion when they pulled the tank.
So you know, inspection of the tank from above or the side will often show no corrosion. You must remove the tank and inspect under the tie down straps.

Thanks for the response!  This pump is bolted to the back of the gas tank.  This hatch is in between the two batteries.  Pretty much right in front of the outboard motor.  Thanks...

Well unless someone has seriously altered your CCP the pump isn't bolted to the tank.
Take a look forward of the walk through, just behind the pedestal seats. Mine has an access plate there. If you have this plate, remove it and you should see the back of the main tank (85gals.) and possibably an old 2"x4" holding it in place. Also look under the console. There should be another plate there that allows access to the top of the tank.

I believe what we are seeing from your pics is the back of the livewell.
Is there a hatch cover between the plate and the motor?

Yes, exactly...there is a hatch.  I thought that was a fresh water hatch?  I am sure what that hatch/tank is for.  Is that tank for fresh or salt water.

That is the factory livewell (fresh water if your fishing the lake, salt if fishing the Atlantic). I'm fuzzy on its operation since I don't use mine and have sealed it off. The prior owner of my CCP had a small Rule bilge pump installed in the well that circulated the water and aerated same through a perforated pipe mounted near the top inside of the well.
From what I could tell he filled it with a bucket or hose. I believe there was a factory fitting that performed that function but wasn't (or had been removed) persent when I received the craft.

I may get flamed here but I don't care for the well and as stated above have sealed it off. It had a reputation (on my boat ) for allowing water to enter the bilge in a heavy, following sea. Let the Capt beware.

Back to you orginal question concerning fumes, check the tank as DF has stated. It's living (assuming it's the orginal) on borrowed time.
