When to paint, when to re-gelcoat questions ( 170 )

For what it's worth, my other project boat I opted for Awlgrip (sprayed on) when I did the "original" re-build and I have been extremly pleased with the result.  I did have to go back and replace the transom (long story, lesson learned) last summer and rolled and tipped the Awlgrip which I was VERY surprised how easy it was and how well it came out.

But, I did not have to try to blend the repair since the repainting started at the transom corners.  If I had I think I would have had trouble trying to blend the repair.

Paint = more prep before, cost more

Gelcoat = less prep before and a TON after to make it look like paint.

My father has been commercial fishing for 30years, most of the guys gel coat because of the cost savings.  They also don't wet sand (fish don't care about shine ;)).  Some of the boats in the fleet have switched to awlgrip and the stuff is pretty tuff.

More work before or after, it's up to you

i work in a fiberglass shop and as far as i know we use duratec as a primer for awlgrip

Duratec makes a bunch of products, I was refering to their high gloss additive 904-040.
