CCP tackle locker install
« on: March 30, 2008, 04:53:54 PM »
I've been thinking about using some of the space between the hull and the liner on my CCP.  I fish shallow water mostly from the front, so some quick measurements showed I could install those neat tackle boxes there.     Here's how the final product looks - and it's easy to do:

First some measurements - A 13" x 15" IPS 3-drawer unit will fit if you mount it 1" under the top lip of the liner and 8.5" in front of the stowage edge:

Tape the template to the hull (make sure it's straight!) and cut on the line.  I like to have nice rounded corners, so I cut 2" circles in the corners with a hole saw, then use the trusty sawzall to cut the straight sides:

After hole is cut out, check for fit and, if it fits, caulk the edges:

Install the screws, clean the excess caulk from the edges, and you're done:

Pretty cool!  I put one on each side - 6 tackle drawers at close reach!

See ya on the water!

Nice Job GF  :thumright:
This might work on a lot of the "liner boats" - even my 170 :!:

What is the gauge in the pics for? Trolling motor voltage?

Yes, the gauge gives volts for the main battery, which carries more load than the second battery, so it makes sense to monitor the main.     The trolling motor is 24 volt, so it runs off both, but I also have a reserve battery for emergency starting just in case...

Very cool.  I have also thought about adding more rod holder cutouts but have not investigated the clearances.  Why make the effort with gasoline prices...

Now, are there any gasketed boxes that will fit?  I have switched all my boxes to the Plano with the rubber "o-ring" gaskets.  They do help keep your hooks from rusting.  (nothing prevents it completely)

Gonefission - can you post up a picture or two showing your trolling motor mount?  Looking to understand the best way to set it up on mine...

Thanks...

Trolling motor mount

I used the big MotorGuide removable mount with my MinnKota motor, so I can take it off if needed:

The CCP requires a trolling motor with a 60" shaft, so MinnKota is the way to go with the composite shaft.  Had to redrill the holes, cuz the bolt pattern is different for MinnKota and MotorGuide.  I also moved one of the bow cleats to make room for the trolling motor mount.

Here it is deployed and stowed:

Very nice - thanks.

How does that motor handle you 222?  Work well?

Trolling Motor

Mine is a MinnKota Riptide 70 with 70 lb thrust and Autopilot with wireless remote.  The autopilot feature with the wireless remote is great!  I can control the boat from the front, back, or even from a nearby dock if needed.  Also, the autopilot has a built-in compass, so it keeps a heading even if the wind or current changes.  The Riptide model is specially designed for salt water use; I would NOT buy a fresh water model - even occassional salt exposure could be troublesome...    :x

This motor has worked well for me, especially fishing back bays and grassy areas.  I've run it up on oyster bars a few times and the composite shaft really makes a difference.  Note this is a 24 volt motor, so you need 2 batteries and big wire - up to 50 amps - so #6 is about right.  I would not recommend a 12 volt motor for a 22 foot boat like mine - it's just too big and heavy for a 12 volt with 55 lbs...  :(    a 55 running on 12 volts might be OK on a 170.

The newest model is the Riptide ST 80, with thrust now up to 80 lbs:  http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/ ... _riptidest

Also, the propeller makes a difference, and I have replaced mine with a Kipawa prop - it really works!  You can check out Kipawa props at:

Hope this helps - see ya on the water!
