New with some questions about my Evinrude, "peeing"
« on: April 07, 2008, 11:31:24 AM »
First, just wanted to say this board is great and one of the deciding factors for me buying a 170 as my first boat.

I have an Evinrude 115 on it, and have a couple of questions-
Just aquired the boat last week, so sorry if these are noob questions.

I had to go through a shallow canal at low tide and ended up picking up some mud- since then my motor has stopped "peeing"
I don't know what it's called to search info on it, or how I can fix it.!?
I noticed when I tried flushing it, that the screen on the intake is missing on one side.  So it's possible some silt or something went in.

When I flushed it, water came out of the prop part of the exhaust no problem, and I didn't see the temp rise at all on the gauge (but I don't know for certain the gauge is working).

Also, I noticed my Tach bouncing a bit when I had it opened up- is this an indication that I have a problem with my stator or with my Tach gauge?

Thanks for all your help!

Your motor has pissing problems due to a blocked urinary passage.
You should be able to remove the black fitting (where peeing takes place)and rinse out the fitting and surrounding area. If you don't have the proper size wrench, you can use an expandable type (cresent) or large adjustable pliers. The large nut is plastic so easy does it, so not to bugger up the flats. Not hard really and this happens often to "skinny water" guys. You may also try inserting a "cathiter" (piece of small, solid wire in this case) into the fitting and that will often remove the blockage.

You'll notice that when you replace the fitting and tighten everything down, you can set the fitting at an angle that will allow a good visual check while under way.

I keep mine pointing down (of course) and to the left. A quick look over the shoulder gives a good read of the pressure. You may want to install an actual water pressure gauge to really help your peace of mind but that's another story.

What Capt. Bob said.  I always called it a "tattle-tail", because it tells on the waterpump.  I carry a piece of #12 solid copper wire for the quick clean out.  Just poke it up the tube (engine running) and work it around.  Even if you had the screen on the lower unit in place small particles will still get through.

With my Evinrude 115 (late 90s) that black fitting can be removed and a hose connected there to flush the motor that way.  You can blast away everything that way.  Sometimes if a motor sits for a while you could get mud-daubers and ants in the engine because of the residual water and they can clog/plug up the tattle-tale hole.  Use wire, as suggested to clear it.
The rebuilder told me to use muffs when flushing the motor normally, as it will clean out the water pump too.

If it's like my 225 it's what Capt. Bob said.  The black fitting on mine gets plugged with sand or tiny pieces of shell (kidney stones ;) ).  On the 225 a spark plug socket fits perfectly.  I found an old plug wrench in the garage that came with a chainsaw many years ago.  It has a new home on the boat now.

I always try some 40lb. leader material fed up thru the fallic member to see if it is simply blocked at the tube, usually works.

Crazy tach on a JohnnyRude is usually caused by the voltage regulator going bad.  How is your charging voltage?

Here's a link to the iboats Evinrude repair board.  I have gotten volumes of great advice and help from these guys.  Use the search feature and type in your problem.  There is so much info on this site, you could spend all day.

I fixed my identical tach problem on my 115 by installing a water cooled voltage regualtor.

I took a fishing leader and put it up the hole last night- and when I gave it a few turns a bunch of muck came out, dry at first, then water-
I didn't have my key on my to flush it and see if that fixed it but I feel good about it!

The motor is a E115TLCRD  Charging voltage was NOT good last time I was out- I got a couple warnings on my fish finder about low voltage and When I got back to the dock the charger said I was at ~50% charge.

I'll try to find a voltage regulator I guess :)

Do you remember what the part number was on that bugger?
I think I found it, but I'm not sure:

Hopefully I can find it a bit cheaper...
