HIN & S/N
« on: April 23, 2005, 12:40:30 PM »
In the process of registering my 170, I discovered the boat must be older than I thought.  The guy I bought it from had it registered as built in '73.  The boat however, does not have a 12 character hull identification number (HIN).  The only identification number which I can find on the boat is the serial number C484 on the plastic builder's plate on the transom inside port side.

According to http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html , the HIN was required for all boats built after Nov, 1972.  That makes my boat pre-1972.

Is there any way to determine the actual year the boat was built?

Well, that means it had to be a '70 or a '71, because the 17-footer was first produced in 1970. Maybe some day, we will be able to get a list of hulls produced year-by-year, but for now knowing that it is one of two years sounds pretty good.
