Help me buy the right boat!!!!
« on: June 29, 2007, 06:42:32 PM »
First post here, I am very happy to have found this site.  I grew up fishing on a 1970's Aquasport 19 6.  I have seen more and more beautiful restorations over the years and am now ready to take one on myself.  My fising interests are mostly inshore snook/redfish  passes/bays/flats with an occasional offshore trip.  I am looking for a shallow draft hull that can be taken offshore on the right day.  What year did Aquasport change the hull design?  Is anything built in the 1970's going to fit the bill?  How about the 80's?  How much difference is there in draft between the 19 6 and 222?  What years were the shallow draft boats built?  The flatbacks seem hard to come by but there seem to be plenty of semi-v on the market.  What years are most desirable and what should I be looking for?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard likesnook  :!:  :!:
Another Sarasotan  8)
My 170 is the 10-12 degree model and she'll float in skinnier water than the trolling motor can deal with.  A Flatback floats in around the same so that shouldn't an issue.
Buy what :
1) you can afford
2) you think you can control on the water
3) will fit in your yard
4) you have the capability to tow
5) is big enough for you and your family
6) , if in need of rebuild, you're willing to tackle or
7) you can afford to have someone else tackle for you
8 ) you can afford to store at a marina

And then:
1) , if minor repairs are needed, take it easy - it all doesn't have to be fixed today
2) if it's seaworthy, take her out more than you work on her
3) take your wife and kids fishin'
4) be proud of them being proud of who they're with and the boat they're in

Again Welcome Aboard.
