1989 AS 222 CCP

I am going to take a look at a 1989 222 ccp tomorrow evening.  I've done quite a bit of research through this site and others on the model.  Any words of caution or suggestions for potential trouble areas I should pay particular attention to?

Its already had the transom reworked and enclosed and the gas tank replaced.

Any thoughts out there?

Welcome!!!

Check for any soft spots in the deck.  If it's real squishy it'll need to be replaced sometime but the boat would certainly be usable as is.

Might want to do a compression test on the motor as well.  If it can be put in the water take it for a spin.  Check out nav. lights, bilge pump and any other items which are switched from the console.

Good luck and post some pictures if you go ahead with the purchase.

Right on... check for electrical and hydraulic issues also.  Not that they are a huge deal, but something to keep in mind.  

Also- make sure the transom was done correctly- you don't want to do it again anytime soon!

I am going to crawl all over her tomorrow.  I think I've asked every question under the sun- its now time to put my eyes on it.

I hadn't, however, asked too much about the electrical system and what shape its in.

Welcome JB - you mean there is another site dedicated to Aquasports - and has as much knowledge as these guys do?  :wink:
Anyway, I agree with what was offered.  If it comes with a trailer, make sure it'll get you home.

these were rated for 240HP, see if he has a new HP rating on the capacity plate for the additional length, 60HP over the listed rating may raise eyebrows with some insurance companies.

That's her.  I took a ride last night and looked all over her.  A lot of what I expected on a 18 year old boat cosmetically.  The owner has certainly fixed important things such as the transom, and gas tank.  There aren't any soft spots on the deck and the hull is relatively scratch and dent free.  There is some chalking and gel-coat flaking on the port side gel coat, but it appears cosmetic.  Overall, the boat is solid as far as I can tell. And the Motors are in good condition.  The electronic system is all working- livewell, fishbox pump, lights...  It's just an 18 year old boat that is showing some of its 18 years.

I need to look into the HP issue as you suggest and check the pricing on some of the things I would want to do to her to get her up to my preferred specs.  

I don't know what I want to do at this point...

Too funny... I talked to that gentleman also- was wondering if that was the CCP you were going to look at, but did not want to taint your opinion.  I was thinking about heading over to check her out (for a friend who wants a CCP- NOT ME JIM!), but a few things stood out that made me think again.  

First, he closed off the transom because the hull sat too low in the water and would take water over the transom (due to the weight of the two motors) which is not really the fix I would have preferred.  Second, he toasted the same motor twice- once due to (what he says) water being sucked into the motor and second by what he said was a failed oil injection system.  He said the boat is now premix only- which I guess is fine... but is still a PITA.  I do not know how if there are any ramifications to EFIs being premixed... I know that when one decides to premix a carb motor you have to adjust mix (fuel/air ratio decreased by addition of oil)- I assume the EFI takes care of that itself... any EFI experts here?

Anyway, IMHO $16.5k is a little high for that boat without a trailer... there are a lot of CCPs running around for less than that.  Even if he came off the price by $1k, you will still be out the door at $17.5-$18k with a trailer.

A lot of my concerns.  I noticed and commented on the way she sat in the water yesterday.  And the rebuilt motors...  Also, mixing oil at fill-up is a pain.  I am afraid that even if I got past those issues, the price isn't good enough for me.  To do what I would want to do, I would be above $20k with a trailer and for that boat- too much.  Now if you picked it up for 10k....

Actually, I was probably talking myself into something that wasn't right for me anyhow.  I think I am really a better fit for a flatback.  

Back to the drawing board.  The advice is much appreciated. Rest assured, you guys will know when I am looking at another one...

FBs are nice... obviously I am doing one.  But don't discount the other early to late 1970s 222's either (predecessor of the Osprey)... their draft is only sloghtly more than a FB and they are great boats too!
