Tach Question
« on: January 21, 2007, 01:43:25 PM »
I have a 1972 22' Aquasport CC with a 1982 Mercury V6 200 hp. It came with 2 tach's (boat used to have 2 outboards), neither one hooked up. I tried hooking them up, one at a time, but neither one works. Here's what I've done. The manual says the "gray" wire is the sender wire for the tach. So I connected that to the "SND" on the tach, the "IGN" from the tach to the power (red) wire from the harness, and the "GND" from the tach to the "NEG" on the battery. I tried one, then the other - nothing. I checked the calibration at the back, both were at "6p" (pulses??). Anyway, I bought 2 used Suzuki tachs, said to be working and replaced with digital, tried those calibrated to "6p" as well. Still nothing. So I'm thinking, the tachs can't all be bad - all 4 of them???? Not likely. Maybe the gray wire from the harness is bad, not connected to the engine??? Is there a way to test this, maybe with a voltmeter, touch the probe to the gray wire, the other probe to????? Or maybe one probe at the "SND" at the back to the tach, the other probe to ??? I don't know how to test for this condition. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

You might want to try and check the rectifier.  This in so many words sends the signal to your tach.  The 200 CCP I just bought, the tach is not working either.  When you turn the key on does the tach go to zero :?: Sometimes they will creep up will sitting.  If you think that it is all hooked up right check the rectifier.  I think that is my problem as well.  Not quite sure where it is on the 200 Mercury so I need to find out myself.  If no one else chimes in, should be able to tell you where it is located by tonight.

I have a manual, so I'll try to locate it. If not, shoot me an e-mail anyway if you know where it is. Then, once I find it, how do I know it's bad? Thanks again.

I am not quite sure where the rectifier is on our motors.  If you will go to outboardignition.com and select your motor you can find it and it will show you a picture.  It is square with 3 terminals.  Also, you can go to themarinedoctor.com and it will show you how to test it.  I have not figured out how to put a link on the site for you.  Hope this helps.

Simply a copy & paste.

Go to the page you want to link to.

At to top of your screen right click once over the address (starts with http://).  This will highlight the address and open an edit menu.

On the edit menu left click on "copy".  That stores the highlighted address in a temporary file.

Now, go to the page where you want to add the the link. Put the cursor where  you want the link to be placed and right click again.  In the menu you'll see "paste". Left click "paste" and the copied address will be pasted to your message.

Hello,
Don't know if you still have the boat, but your ignition power wire is purple.  Try that to the power stud on the back side of the tachs.  Most tachs (OMC, Merc, Faria, etc.) are set up for bigger V6's, so that should not be an issue.  Remember, the purple wire.  That is ignition power.  If any doubts, put a meter on the purple with ignition on.
