Rick, yes my boat has a tunnel about 6 inches wide running starboard to the center of transom with a small sump about 8 x 6 inches.  I installed the two new drains as low as possible to floor about a foot from starboard and port.

Miguel maybe you are right I checked my speed with my gps last sunday and toped out at 41 with a little chop.  I guess I was wrong or the colorado river current was pushing me the last time.

That could make a difference.....
These hulls are heavy for their size when compared to other 17 footers or even larger bay/flats boats. I believe they were designed to have a terminal speed of about 40mph.  It would take substantial amounts of additional HP to increase speed above that treshold.

I have a 140 V-4 Johnson on mine and on a calm night going with the tide and me and my wife, GPS said 39.8 mph. It felt like thats about all the hull could do anyway. If I repowered I'd go for a 90 Yam. Less weight. I'm to heavy at the transom at drift.

Hey, if you're going to raise the deck and move the scuppers and all that, why stop at 115 on that 170?  What you need is MORE POWER!       With 4 liters, 300 HP, and ONLY 604 lbs dry - put one of these on the back - as long as you never stop you will be happy!

Geez man, where have you been?  We have a new leader in the "ridiculously overweight outboard engine" contest....

F350 Yamaha checks in at something like 804 lbs.

But on the other hand, if you want to leave those scuppers where they are...

Nice Jim.  Marine Surplus has at least twenty motors of similar vintage hanging from the ceiling of their warehouse.  I didn't notice them until the last time I was there.

since we are on a major derail:

As a teenager I had a Scott Attwater 5HP my old man traded from someone.  At 14 I built my own 8' plywood boat with 3/4 plywood, nails,  and roofing cement.  Damn motor almost sunk it.  It worked a lot better with a paddle.

My youngest son has an OB made by the Martin Boiler Company.  I have not seen it yet and don't know the HP.  He said I could have it if I wanted it but I have enough junk already.

De-rail?  The man asked for suggestions.

OK, so how 'bout the Scott-Atwater 5?

Seriously though, I think 115 is the edge for a 170.  Weight's the killer with big engines.

 That would definitely sink my little boat - imagine backing it down the ramp and the boat stays on the trailer, never floating off, right under water....

It won't be long before you start seeing these stacked up as "trips" or "quads" on the back of some tournament/go-fast boats.  Let me see, 2 of these=more than my entire 170 with motor today.
