engine bogging down
« on: February 06, 2007, 08:27:38 PM »
last season i noticed a few times that when i would put the engine into gear then give it a little gas it would bog down for a few seconds then it would get power. it almost felt like the engine wanted fuel but was not getting it. i dont think it is a clogged fuel line because she cruises fine and at WOT everything is also fine. what could be wrong?

Sounds like it's running a bit lean. Upon acceleration, if the idle jets are set on the lean side, you'll have a brief hesitation before the mains take over.  Correct way to adjust idle jets, at least the procedure Mercury recommends, is to tie the boat to the dock and put it in forward, leaving it at idle.  One carb. at a time, lean the idle jet until the engine just starts loosing RPM then open it a turn or a turn and a half.  Should fix the problem.  Be interested to hear your results.

I looked at an old lapstrake Mackenzie in Mineola a few years ago.  Too big a project for me at the time.

You fish both N. and S. shore?
