74’ 22-2 project
« on: August 31, 2021, 01:09:39 PM »
Spring of 21’ I picked up a 1974 22-2 semi v from Monmouth, NJ and got her home to the eastern shore of Maryland. Original floor had a soft spot around a non factory floor hatch behind the casting platform. Upon further inspection I found that they had cut that hatch in to address a stinger delaminating on port side. After demo I found out how bad that stinger really was.

For now on the to do list I have a lot of grinding, full transom with support knees, as well as stringer rebuild.  I plan on making a form to pour foam stingers then glass over as others on this site have done.

Future plans consist of: flat deck with floor hatch’s, half tower, Armstrong or stoner bracket, 200hp power.

Sounds like your plan will get you where you need to be. We have a ton of examples in the rebuild forums of exactly what you plan to do.

Those flexure cracks at the stringer step down are kind of scary! Any distress in the hull at that point?

Nice project! Great foundation you have there for a rebuild! Looking forward to seeing the progress. You have the picture posting down which we all love 😁. Not many down in Florida do the straight deck for the type of fishing we do so it would be nice to see. - Ulysses

Thanks all. I’ve spent a lot of time combing through others builds and I know that good pictures go a long way.

Wing nut, there is not any distress in the hull that I can see but I’ve got a load of grinding up there before I can really get an eye on what is going on. The stinger is delaminated, they attempted to fix by accessing the area through the port casting platform hatch and a hatch they cut in the deck. My guess is the problem was greater then what they “fixed” and it got worse with continued use.

Thank you Ulysses, the boat will be used for generally fishing the Chesapeake, as well as some wreck fishing off De/Md, and of course some sand bar cruising. The flat deck idea I have seen done on a few builds and I really liked how much it opens the boat up. I kept the entire platform when I removed it because I was up in the air about it, the thought of throwing away all that storage only to spend money on adding less storage did not sit well. I will have to find a thread where someone restores the boxes and deck to see if it’s something i want to tackle. I enjoy your boat and overall build, it’s one I have book marked.

shew its been some time since ive been back here.

update: ive been grinding my life away in between house projects. ive got the boat completely ground out and clean. ill attach some pictures for helpful criticism. in the short term i recently blocked the boat up to get it square and level for upcoming stringer and bulkhead layout. Planning on using a polyiso foam and epoxy for the stringer and bulk head construction much like guys on here have and builders like ltb etc use for construction.
semi clean

blocked up to drain

I want to use the factory casting platform and hatches because they are in great shape and to save time and money why build new. My ideal situation up there is to use the front two side by side hatches as a fish box/cooler that is open to all the space all the way down the the stringers. plan to glass in foam insulation and bulk head forward to close it off to the larger forward hold. Forward i would like to just bilge coat and mount my trolling motor battery and rigging as well as lots of dry storage for bumpers and ropes etc.

Has anyone done something similar by modifying the factory casting platform ? any links to a build would be great!
