1996 Osprey 200 vs 1982 196
« on: June 09, 2023, 10:25:50 AM »
So, tell me if I'm crazy or not. My 1996 Osprey 200 has developed issues. Deck has become increasingly soft and spongy, especially between leaning post and console. One other soft spot starboard of console. Was going to start dismantling console to begin the process of cutting out the deck to recore it. Also will check stringers and tank for possible repair/replacement.
But then I came across a 1982 196 in excellent condition. So I'm considering buying the 1982 and selling the 1996. The 1982 appears solid as a rock. So, what are the chances, after 41 years, that the deck and stringers are truly solid. Could I have truly stumbled upon a 41 yr old boat with no issues? Its been under cover all its life. Help.

The biggest culprit in a spongy deck is improper sealing/maintenance of deck penetrations. Seems your 96 is soft in those spots so....

It's very possible the 82 deck is in good shape when considering the above.

Good luck.

RickK, been reading your posts for years. Complete respect for your experience and knowledge base. I'm just concerned that the inject a deck method leaves rotting wood in the deck and the rot could spread beyond the area that is injected. Don't want to do this again in a few years.

How do you feal about your engine?  IMO it's more important and more expensive to remedy than the soft deck.  I rebuilt a 1985 200/196 and I opted to inject epoxy into the deck 3 years ago now and still rock solid BUT I do keep it on a trailer and covered.  Just be careful not to drill right through the fuel coffin cover as it's thinner than the deck.  I bought some empty caulking tubes and filled them and injected.  there's a post on this site.  Be sure to have a good 'dam' around the round acces portss too.  With the paint (interthane 990) and non skid I used you could do the deck in short order for under $300.  Buy a gallon of black and a gallon of white and mix them to a grey you like.
