215 Explorer prop advice
« on: June 28, 2022, 12:37:34 AM »
Evening all, New to the club here. I have a 1999 Wellcraft 22 WA which should be The same hill as the Explorer 215 (less Pulpit on explorer) I’m powered with a 2004 225 Mercury EFI. Motor had 54 hrs. on it when I got it a month ago, looks brand new. Spent the last month going through the motor (injectors cleaned and flow tested, vst cleaned, water pump, etc.) and finally got it in the water yesterday, 60 lbs ice, a buddy, and 100 gallons of fresh gas. I’m trying to figure out where the gas went…. It’s not in the bilge, or the tank but on a 144 mile trip I had to add 20 gallons to make it home. Back on E. Running a 4 blade 18 pitch stiletto prop, and it’s hitting ~ 5500 trimmed out loaded which is the upper end of my range for that motor. Ran at ~ 24mph out of Galveston around 3900-4100 rpm most of the trip, no wot to speak of. Waves in gulf ~2’ a little steep and pretty short on the period. Anyone else running a 2 stroke carb or efi (Non HPDI) doing any better here? Any prop advice? Thanks!

Hi, I have a 215E also but repowered with a 300 4 stroke, the original 200 2 stroke lasted 20 minutes before it ate a piston, so I have no numbers for that engine. I've heard that older 2 stroke engines were not very efficient, seems that yours is giving you about 1.2 mpg which might be "in range" for that engine? Hopefully someone will be able to answer you soon.

Just in case, have you checked there are any hidden fuel leaks inside the engine itself, perhaps draining out the sides into the water or thru the exhaust? Anyway, I wish you good luck with the boat!

Waterproof,

There'e an old formula for GPH on older 2 stroke outboards. You burn appox. 10% of your horse power at WOT (wide open throttle) or in your case 22.5 gallons of fuel per hour. Doing some quick math you ran 144 miles at 24 mph, which equates to 6 hours of running time. 6x22.5 is 135 gallons of fuel give or take a few gallons. Kind of puts you in the correct range.

I had similar GPH rates when I first got mine. I came with a 150hp Johnson and I burned about 15 GPH when running hard. The fuel economy didn't go up until I repowered with a modern ETEC outboard.
