1985 250ccp transom drain?

Hello Everyone,
    New to the forum so hello and been reading for weeks on here.  Our 84 250ccp has been taking on water since putting it in the canal about a week ago.  The boat was always trailered by previous owner, so he didn't notice becuase its about 4 or 5 gallons a day.  I plugged the deck drains to eliminate those and it still kept coming in.
    We pulled it out of the water and filled the bilge a bit with water overnight to help find the leak. Turns out it's leaking pretty good out of what looks like an abandoned drain for an old livewell I think it was originally for.  The location on the inside of the transom is NOT visible as it's blocked by said abandoned live well just behind the engine.   
   My question is does anyone know if this isn't a drain for a potential live well, and is it some type of siphon for the bilge when on plane.  I'm just trying to plug it up and put it back in the water and be sealed.  Any info from the gang would be super appreciated.

First off, it's been a very long time since I owned a CCP so my memory isn't the best.

Does your transom look similar to this?


If so, I faintly recall the livewell had either a drain or a raw water feed (scoop) on the outside of the transom. I added a flotation bracket to mine and I'm pretty sure I sealed this hole in the transom as the bracket mount covered it. You should be able to see where this exits the transom. Sorry, but I have no pics from that era.

Water can also enter through the deck plates when coming off a plane.

A photo or two of the leak would be very helpful.

Mine looks exactly like that... I just resealed that thru hull well drain with 4200.. setting up now in the transom... I posted a pic in member gallery having trouble uploading it..

Yep, that's it. IIRC it was connected to the livewell with a short section of pipe.

Also,as I stated earlier, you may wish to replace the deck plates with a better sealing screw down/gasket type. In a pounding sea, the hull may "oil can" and eject the pry off type allowing seawater to enter. Water can also enter the lid to the well. This occurs while underway in sloppy/rough seas. A large and well working bilge pump is necessary equipment.

Now I'm hoping it was leaking around the thru hull fitting that I sealed up, or is it leaking through the drain hole in the fitting. Going to fill it up today after work, and see if it holds the water back.
