Wiring 196 for electronics, trolling motor and fishfinders

Hi Everyone,

I have a 196 I'm trying to convert into a freshwater fishing machine. My plan is to install a 24v Trolling motor with a Garmin at the bow, I'll also be adding a Garmin at the helm. 

I currently have a 2 bank 12v set up for the entire boat under the console. I see a lot of people like to set up different battery banks for the bow toys although to me it made sense to have one battery setup so the alternator from the engine could keep them charged.

Does it seem possible/reasonable to run the whole boat with all electronics off that 2 bank 12 v set up?

I think that if you spend a long day on the trolling motor and then try to start the engine, you may be screwed. I would have a dedicated 24V bank.

I’am going with this Troll Bridge setup. 24agm starting and 2 group 31agm for the rest. Love to tell you how the TrollBridge system is working for me but I am still waiting for the new motor. With the chip shortage I might not even get it this year,ugh! Good luck finding batteries too. All batteries get charged from running motor and starting battery protected. Agreed.  Need to isolate 12v for cranking.  Some folks tie in low amp accessory loads to the cranking volts...be that as it may, I do not recommend doing this with a trolling motor, regardless if it’s a 12/24/36v.  They pull a large amount of amps.

I started installing the fish finders yesterday and opted for a Yandina troll bridge as shown above. One transducer will be run off the transom while the other off the trolling motor. I have another older finder that came with the boat that works well and is all set up. Would you guys think I need to remove the older fish finder and transducer so it doesn't interfere with the new transducer? I was thinking I may be able to mount them right next to each other since the frequencies are more than 50 khz apart although it may not be worth the risk of a poorly functioning unit.

Any Thoughts?

Can I splice my rocker panel positive and 24v trolling motor positive together then run them through a 70A circuit breaker? The other end of circuit breaker will connect to the Yandina trollbridge wire.

I guess my question is why would you want to?   The trolling motor is pulling big amps and its cables are at minimum 12 gauge (though likely 8-10g), whereas the rocker panel pulls small amps and is wire 18-22g.  I wouldn't splice anything into the trolling motor circuitry other than the 60-70amp breaker.

I have 2 trolling motors bow and stern and also will be using the Yandina troll bridge I suggested. So on the blue lead from the troll bridge that connects to the positive on the trolling motors I am adding a 60amp breaker and than reusing my guess battery switch that will connect to both motors. Not using the “both” option just the no1,no2 and off. Also running 8 gauge wire to both as recommended by MinnKota. My runs are just about 15 feet each to both motors on my 72 19’6. All batteries are stowed under console seat. Cheers T
