The motor was originally an Evinrude 115.  The compression was good but the motor looked like crap and the tilt trim was all corroded and was useless.  I found a 79 Johnson 115 that had a bad powerhead, but the rest was in good shape.  So I swapped the Evinrude powerhead to the Johnson.  So it is a 79 John, 83 Evinrude.  I just rebuilt the carbs and that old motor runs really well.  I paid about $400 for this boat and am really really happy with it.  Here are a few other pics.  I will probably repaint it this summer and when that engine goes bad I will but an etec on her.

Great looking boat Straight A's.  I like it because the hull color is similar to my 87 222.  The console is also very similar if not exactly the same.  I've been thinking of putting the rodholders onto the console as opposed to the inside of the splash-gate so that when fishing they are not in the way and I noticed you put the rods on the inside of the console rail, how does that work out, the rods don't bounce against the rail too much do they?

Thanks for sharing the pics though.  Keep em coming.

Those rodholders were on there when I bought it but I like them alot.  Only thing is, I did a stupid move and mounted that radio antenna right above one and on the other side I mounted a horn above one.  So I need to move the roddholders back a little.  Regarding the rail.   If I put the rods in from the outside they angel outward and some won't fit in so I had to put them in from the inside.  I really haven't had an issue with them banging that I have noticed.  They tend to hug the console.  I like to have them there.  I put two plastic holders on the transom for trolling so that gives me four rods to troll with.  This winter I hope to purchase a leaning post with holders in the back for trolling more WFB's.  I just haven't found he right leaning post for this little boat.

Great pictures!  Beautiful little creek to have a dock in.

170's are wonderful boats; big enough to handle 3 aboard for fishing but small enough so the projects stay to a manageable size.

On my 170 I had rod holders clamped to the forward bow rails ahead of the console:

That way I could keep an eye on the rods when trolling without turning around to look aft.  I canted the holders outward some to give as much spread as possible.  Mostly I used the aft deck holders as just a place to put the rods when running out to the fishing grounds.  My 170 had holders below the gunnels for horizontal storage but that didn't work out very well since the reels stuck out too much and snagged legs.

The console holders look to be the way to go for storage.  The rods are out of the way but can be pulled into service at a moment's notice.

Nice looking boat - I don't remember if you mentioned it earlier, so I'll ask - what year? What did you end up doing on the transom cracks?
I'm a little confused on the pix in your gallery - it shows that you posted them in Feb/06 but the date stamp on the pix is Sept/06.  Weird.
Colors are changing up there - nice.

Jim, thanks.  The inlet dumps into the lower Potomac/mid bay area.  If you look in the background you can see the affects of the last two hurricanes on the trees.  That is a good idea about putting the rodholders on the cc rail.  I have been surprised at how stable this little boat is too.

Rick, she is an 86.  The floor is solid and so is the transom so I decided to just put some 4200 on the transom crack and plop her in the water.  I figured I can fix the cap in a year or two.  I will probably replace the entire core while i am at it, vs. just a fix.  I have to now focus my  efforts on my 23 foot Allmand, it is in need of a transom core real bad.
