2003 225 explorer smell of gas in cabin
« on: July 04, 2020, 03:14:04 PM »
I filled my 225 explorer the first time and noticed a gas smell in the cabin after I went out fishing yesterday. I checked and do not have an overflow vent . At least not where I can find one. I don’t think I have a tank leak but was wondering if it could be a vent problem. Can anyone please tell me where the vent for gas would be located. Thank you

The fill is on the top of your Gunwale and the vent is below the rubrail in the same area as the fill. Mine is on the Port side just behind the cockpit chairs.

Did you pull the deck plate access to the forward bilge pump?

If not, try that and see if the smell is stronger.

I believe the 225 came with a poly tank. You may have a chaff/crack.

Good luck. :thumright:

No but will do so today. If cracked I can only assume this would be a tank replacement which would mean removing the deck and replacing or is it repairable?

Well let's no assume it's cracked yet. Have you looked at the sender unit just under the cockpit deck plate. Seems I recall a member that had a loose sending unit that would leak when the tank was fairly full and sloshed around.

Removing the tank should be a last resort as Aquasport didn't provide a tank coffin hatch on their later models.

Is the boat on a trailer now or in the water?

It’s on the trailer now. I only have two deck plates. The forward one is not under the cockpit area but between the two chairs. Currently storming but if that’s where the sending unit is I will check. I have a deck plate in the cuddy as well. Would that be part of the tank?
If there are visible cracks or leaks can I repair with jb weld or something like that?

Not that it matters that much but what year is your hull, 2000 or 2003?

The deck plate in the cabin allows access to your front bilge pump. You cannot get/see the tank from there. The plate between the helm chairs should allow access to the fill/vent hose and the fuel gauge sending unit.

Your inner hull is set up something like this:

Looking left to right, down the centerline of the hull:
The small bulkhead in the bow forms the hold for your anchor line.

The next larger bulkhead forms your forward (cabin) bilge. The deck plate resides on the bow side of that bulk head. On the stern side is where your tank compartment (coffin) begins.

The last large bulkhead separates the tank coffin from the rear bilge.

Each of these bulkheads allows water to traverse from bow to stern via a molded opening or conduit. While it's hard to see in the pic, look closely at the bottom of the two larger bulkheads and you can see the conduit. Your fuel tank sits on a platform in the center section between the two bulkheads. This platform allows water to pass underneath, again from front to back while keeping the tank dry (most of the time).

So, if you have a fuel leak and depending on the amount, you might find evidence of it in either of the bilges. Since you stated the smell appeared in the cabin, I would first look at your access there.

As to whether you could use a two part epoxy, I can't say. If the leak was confirmed but only accessible by removing the tank, well replacement rather than repair would be my first choice.

Good luck. :thumright:

This past summer (July 2020), I noticed the same thing after filling the tank, strong gas smell in cabin.  Did you ever find out what was causing your smell?  Mine is a 1999 225 Explorer.
