76 AQUASPORT 222 wet stringers
« on: April 06, 2020, 11:43:11 PM »
I've had the boat for 36 years but it has been in the yard for the last ten (because a new wife showed up with a new boat).  Last year I replaced the spongy decks but now because of Carona Virus lockdown I have time on my hands.  I poked a hole in the stringers and they are very wet.
What's the best way the get the foam out of the stringers and what type and density of foam is used.

PS. Does anyone have a magic way to do this project without tearing my deck out?

I would remove the floor, grind the bonding putty off the top of the stringers and then using a cut-off wheel (or a good jig saw with Sterling blade) cut about 3 ft of the top off and then move 4" along the stringer and cut another 3 ft. Repeat until you have done this to the entire stringer. Repeat on the other stringer.  Leaving the 4" straps across the top of the stringers will help keep the form of the stringer intact and help when refoaming the stringers.
It seems that removing the foam is easiest with a narrow spade or roofing shovel.
New foam: Use 4lb density 2 part foam - the foam is actually part of the structure of the stringers.

Considering using 2'' foam and then pour around them before resealing the stringers.

Should I go with 4lb pouring foam instead?

For inside the stringers go with 4lb because the stringers themselves are not really structural without the foam inside them.

Would the 4LB foam be open or closed cell.  Does the pour have to continuous or can I do it in sections if I only do four feet of stringer at a time?
Any recommended vendor in the northeast?

It’s closed cell, but cutting it leaves a layer of exposed cells.  Yes, you can do multiple pours.  You really need to if you need to fill a large space. Otherwise heat becomes a problem.

I finished removing the top of the stringers, removing the wet foam and standing water, and replacing the foam and tops of the stringers.  I'm very proud of my self, very straight forward and therapeutic considering I am working in third world conditions in suburbia.  I'm not allowed to uncover the boat, can't remove the center console from the footprint of the boat( I move it around a lot) and if I could unblock the boat and lower it to the ground I could stay old longer.

Next issue is rebuilding the fuel tank coffin box.  The factory used felt padding and insulation covered with a brittle foam.  I assume it is to thermally insulate the tank.  Is this still used and necessary?  I had planned  on foaming in  a cradle of Azak trim board, epoxy sticks to it, it's free but heavy.
