New (to me) Osprey 170, and how to remove old fuel

Howdy

New member here, and I just picked up an 86 Osprey 170. Boat seems to be in great shape, just a bit of dirt and some faded wood trim. Hasn’t run in a few years, but I rebuilt the carbs, replaced the fluids, battery, and placed it on an aux fuel tank... she runs!

The PO hit a sandbar and sucked up a lot of dirt/sand in the intake, clogging it. But he was sharp enough to shut the engine off before an overheat. I haven’t splashed it yet, don’t know if the lower unit is leaking, but there was water in the gear oil before I changed it.

Question... what’s the easiest way to get the old fuel out on the tank? Do I just open the tank at the sending unit and siphon it out? It’s about half full I believe, but I don’t smell fuel in the bilge, so I take that as a good sign that it’s solid.

Thanks
Taylor

Siphoning works for me. I drain my tank each year but I have a separate fuel pick up dedicated to that task. You could use your fuel pickup or as you stated, drain from the sender hole.

Good luck. :thumright:
