Max HP for my 245 explorer re-power

Hi all! I’m needing to re-power my 97 245 explorer. I’m looking pre-owned save some money. What is the max HP I can throw on the boat? My research is suggesting 300 is the max. I planned on going with another 250 but found a great deal on a Yamaha 350. I wouldn’t have considered that big of a motor if it wasn’t for the deal being offered. Thanks for the help

If you plan to keep the insurance on your boat you'd better stick to the manufacturer's max rating.

You are correct. Max HP is listed at 300. Rick makes a good point about insurance but my concern would be weight. If it is close in weight to a 300hp it would work without much concern to transom strength.
Good luck.

It could also be that 300 hp engine in 1997 was heavier than current engines. I don’t recall many 300’s back then so probably max. rated for twins.
Just looking at NADA info & most engines in ‘97 were 225-250 coming in under 500# while 350 Yamaha is almost 800#.

Following that line of thought, a 97 150 was just over 400lbs. so twins would exceed that 800 lb. weight.
Still, that's a lot of weight on the back of that boat.

Makes sense. If that model had optional twin 150s then I say weight of single 350 shouldn’t be an issue

Is your current engine a Yamaha? If not, you may need new controls and gauges - that may make the deal "not so great." The easiest up-power will be to stay with the same manufacturer. The 350 Yammie is a big, heavy V-8 engine. Most 300 HP engines are V-6, a lot lighter, and you won't get in insurance trouble. There are a lot of used 300s in the market now, Merc, Rude, Zuki, and Yammie - look around a bit and you might find a surprise.

Hi George here . New here to forum . If you go with the 350hp (monster) i sure would like to see a picture if you don’t mind. I am in market for a 250 and asked my self the same question 300 or maybe a 350 when repowering. Good Luck
