19-1 or 19-6
« on: October 31, 2019, 07:48:47 PM »
Long time lurker, first time caller. Toying with the idea of picking up a new project boat to do over the winter, would really like to do a Aquasport. I am no stranger to the work just looking for information on the 19-1 and 19-6 (1973?). Both are available relatively close and was wondering if one would be a better choice based on ride and performance or any other factors. Both are total basket cases needing about the same amount of work. Thanks in advance.

1971 or 1972 were the last years for the 19-1.  Then came the 19-6 and then the 200.  Which one - 19-1 or 19-6?  It depends on your preferences.  The 19-1 is the early model with less deadrise and a simple hull shape that came from the Sargent-Coburn design that was originally in plywood.  The 19-6 is a later design that includes some forward lifting strakes.  The 19-6 will ride and perform better, but does not have the "classic" look of the 19-1.  The 19-6 takes 1" more water to float than a 19-1.  The build quality of the early boats was variable - some were put together well - some not so much.  Both had wood-cored decks and transom with the foam-filled fiberglass stringers.

it comes down to looks versus practicality.  The 19-6 is probably a better boat, but some folks love the look of the old 19-1 and 22-2 boats.  Browse through the Gallery section and you can find pictures of both with nice rebuild descriptions as well.

Hope this helps - good luck and welcome!   :welcome01:
