SEI Lower Units

I hit something with my lower unit a month ago and the lower unit is cracked.  My insurance company did not want to spring for a brand new OEM lower on a 1999 motor and boat.  I could have pushed the issue but I can understand where they are coming from.  Anyway, just got the lower unit in from SEI and installed.  I have not started the break in procedure yet.

I have read all the horror stories on the internet but it seems to me it's 70/30 or even 80/20 good to bad.  I realize that the break in is critical, and I am sure some folks did not follow that and that lead to the quick demise of their lower unit.

I just wanted to see if anyone on this site has had any dealings with SEI lowers and what your experience is.

I know Bruce Berger was running one on his 225hp on his 245 Osprey. Also Carl McTavish is running one on his 200hp on his 205 with good results.  They assemble those SEI lowers here in Oldsmar not far from me. I belive following the proper break in is the key.

What was broken on your lower unit case? Those are easy to weld up. I know a guy here in town that specializes in repairing the cases.  I've helped weld on new skegs and cavitation plates.

Thanks for the info Bruce.  So far so good with the new lower unit.  I have completed 3 hours of the break in period.  Never exceeded 3500.00 rpms and unit is smooth and shifts well.  Once I hit the 5 hour mark I can start getting her up some.

The lower unit was cracked at the very front.  It was taking in water and leaking fluid.  I really never considered trying to repair it because it is the original lower unit and is 19 years old.  Only time will tell but so far so good with the new SEI unit.  The 3 year warranty makes me feel better as well.
