Self-Bailing drain hole missing cover
« on: May 29, 2018, 11:46:17 AM »
Hey Guys,

Looking for a replacement part for the inside of one of my self bailing drain holes in the back. One of them still has some sort of metal tube to fill the hole and I guess the other side has fallen out...

Anyone know where to find a replacement?

Are you asking about the brass tubes that line the holes?  Like this?

If so, you’ll need a flaring tool to flair the tube after you cut it off to the correct length.

Yep, that's it! What would you use to install it and seal it?

You will need a flateing tool like this.:  https://www.wholesalemarine.com/sea-dog-drain-tube-flare-tool-520290-1.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIja-Lz6Ot2wIVD7nACh0gMQ-AEAQYAiABEgJnnfD_BwE

If it were me, I’d remove old tube.
Make certain core is dry.
Seal core with penetrating epoxy. Allow to fully cure.
Fit and trim tube to length,  1/8” or so longer than transom.
Heat trimmed end with torch until it is orange and allow to cool.  (This is called sneaking and it will help prevent tube from splitting)
Seal with good quality caulk.
Flair the tube.

Use a pencil laid on it's side to mark the cut line on the replacement tube.  Old trick I learned from Bob who used to work at Aquasport.  I did it on mine and it worked great.

I removed my old ones and allowed the core to air out a few days.  I cleaned up inside the holes with a small sanding drum bit.  Then coated it with good epoxy to seal the wood core.  The I installed the new brass tube with 5200 and the flaring tool.  Be sure to inspect the new tubes when you buy them.  One of mine had a crack in it.

Below are some pics of when I replaced mine.  Not sure if photobucket will allow you to see them.
