Baystar or Seastar on 200CCP
« on: August 13, 2017, 03:11:53 PM »
I'm upgrading my 200CCP to a hydraulic steering system.  Given the following, which system would you recommend Baystar or Seastar?

1980 200CCP
2005 Yamaha F150
Primarily used on Lake Michigan - typically fishing 1-2' waves.
I plan on adding Lowrance Outboard Pilot after this steering upgrade
The deck is off right now so rigging is easy regardless of which system I install
$$ is tight but I want a safe system and I only want to do it once...

Thanks!

I had a Baystar on a Mckee Craft 196 with a Yami 150 with no problems.  It performed flawlessly.  Beyond that, the Baystar is rated to 150 HP, so you're right at the top edge of the rating.  So it depends on your level of comfort.  Are you happy with the cushion the engineers built in, or do you need more?

Thanks mshugg.  I guess my main concern is will the smaller Baystar system work on a 150Hp with autopilot?  Lawrence shows their autopilot coupled to a Baystar system so that is probably my answer.  I just hate doing things twice so I thought I'd ask here first.

I had an earlier version of the Ray Marine autopilot on my McKee.  It performed flawlessly for both running and trolling in up to 2-3' seas.

Please keep us posted, and maybe post some pictures of your boat.  I plan on using the Lawrance Autopilot on my 200 CCP rebuild, but I'm going with. 200 Suzuki and Uflex steering.

I would go with SeaStar - mainly because you can get replacement parts easier.  You can even pick up a system sometimes on eBay that is a new take-off from a repowered boat.  Check it out:
