Rope Rub Rail

My 215 Osprey's rub rail has seen better days. Considering a rope insert. Bought a one foot sample of 3/4" diameter - orange was the only color they had. Probably go with blue or white. If I go this way, how would I secure the ends at the transom?

Don't buy polypropylene rope. It will break down due to UV damage much quicker than other types of ropes.

Also you can get a replacement insert from Taco but I think you can only get white or black.

Well I'd guess you would be purchasing a new end cap but you may wish to secure the last foot or so of the rope in the channel with an adhesive. That way, when you attach the cap, the fastener (screw) will not bear the entire load of holding the rope in place.

Maybe CBs onto something - I put 2 screws through the rope and into the cap joint on each end when I replaced mine with rope in 2000 (putting that rope into the type of rail I have was brutal) - anyway, after 15 years the rope had shrunk about 6" on one side and a couple on the other.

Is nylon the best material to use? Other than poly, I'm only seeing it and cotton.

I used nylon 5/8" line in a 3/4" slot.  When I went back with an insert this time I went with 1/2" black plastic insert - MUCH easier.

Polyester holds up pretty good too.

My rub rail looks the same as yours. I need to replace it as well.

FYI here is the rubrail used on your boats.  It is the 9501 with the 0303 insert.  You can order the insert in black or white from Taco.  It looks like there is a new V12-307 chrome insert that will fit your rubrail as well.
