New to Aquasport
« on: January 19, 2017, 11:21:55 AM »
Greetings everyone.  Looking at a "new" Aquasport but I have to admit, I'm not that knowledgable on them.  The one I'm looking at is called a 1987 24 by the seller.  I looked around and don't see that Aquasport made a 24 in 1987, I'm thinking its a 250 CCP? Any ideas?  It's in great shape and looks like it has been well taken care of over the years but I'm curious about something.

I know how popular the older (late 60's - 70's) 222s are and that the are great boats.  But am I understanding correctly that there was a time after this that Aquasports's quality dropped off a bit?  Maybe I have heard wrong but I'd like to find out if that's true and if it is when this began.

The bottom line is, is this a good boat, reputation wise?  Any problem areas that I should look for when I go to see it?  I know boats pretty well having owned many, from a 16 ft Crosby Sled when I was a kid up to a 36 Cape Horn.  In the mix I opened an Andros Tarpon 26, and I'm thinking that it and the Aquasport will have similar rides?  Any input on that?

Welcome aboard!  The CCP is a great and well built hull.  Aquas were still made well during the 80's from what I have learned.  I had a 1986 222 CCP which was a great boat.  The 250 CCP is a great offshore boat.

Just check for the usual things.  Transom, Tank (is it the original), soft spots in deck.  I don't think an '87 had the coffin box but instead and in deck fish box.  If it does have a coffin box, there might be a hatch in front of the coffin box near the bow on the deck.  That hatch could be prone for water intrusion causing a soft deck.

Post some pictures if you have them, but the CCP is a great hull.

Sounds like it is a 246 or a 250 CCP (center console professional ) as mentioned it is a great hull. The stringers are foam filled. The rest of the boat is traditional wood core construction of that era. So walk on the decks in bare feet to feel for soft spots. Look for loose unsealed screws that could allow water intrusion into the wood cores. Bring a hard plastic hammer to rap on the transom with to listen for "dead spots"
