Original '76 170 Deck Material
« on: November 15, 2016, 07:08:30 PM »
I'm curious to learn what material was used to lay the deck on the '76 170.  I've read this model year has foam stringers, haven't come across other building material details.  Please reply if you know.  Oh, and same question for the the transom.  Thanks!

Im not sure if this is what you are asking but im pretty sure it is a balsa core sandwiched between layers of fiberglass cloth. I also believe they were with built 100% with polyester resin. And you are correct about the stringers.  They are foam filled fiberglass. There is also foam between the stringers and the hull sides. hope this helps!

I belive they had plywood cores not balsa back then. I know my 87 170 has plywood cores everywhere except for the stringers.

Tend to agree. Here's more evidence. Different model but circa 76

81 but still plywood.

Scroll through these photos circa 73. Could be balsa or ply scrapes :ScrChin:

You'll only really know for sure when you open her up.

Good luck. :thumright:
