A rebuilt 17, what do you think? (Pix included)
« on: June 15, 2016, 05:28:52 PM »
Hi Guys!

I am in the market for a boat.  I saw this one listed locally on craigslist.  I have been talking to the current owner.  He informed the rebuild was done by a guy on the East coast of Florida.  The current owner is selling it at his wife's command (she doesn't want another project in the driveway).

I already have an aluminum trailer, and a late model 90 hp two stroke.  The boat needs complete rigging otherwise.  My concern is that the builder used a lot of wood.  No way of telling if it is sealed on both sides.

Considering how much work has to go into the boat, and a lack of information on the rebuild, what is a fair price on it, as-is?  Thanks!

How many ways can you say "can of worms"? The install of the fuel tank alone would have me running. Just my $0.05.

I think it is worth $500 anyway - if it floats and doesn't feel weird when you step in it - go for it. It looks like it'll last many years.

FREE??? Who said free?!  lol!

The seller has it listed for $3000.  Judging by the consensus here anything over a grand is too much??  I worry about how it would be rigging the steering and fuel lines- I can't tell if/how any pvc was run to the stern.

For 3k you can find a boat with a motor and trailer.  If he can't produce more pics showing how it was rebuilt (rigging tubes, stringers, etc) I'd either offer 500 or walk away. Being rebuilt with wood, if treated correctly, is not a bad thing.

as others have said: $500 or walk.

personally- I would keep looking, there are even options for that exact same boat; ready to go on craigslist for similar prices... you can sell or swap your existing motor and you are ahead of the game.

while the main "grunt work" is done on that boat- you have no idea of someone else's quality of work or levels of care they took to make sure things were done properly... and the final parts left are the detail work that can really add-up once you start running wiring systems and buying all those components.

that thing just looks heavy as heck btw with those solid wood sides

Walk.

Save the $500 for fuel for the search.

Good luck with the hunt. :thumright:

Romex?  What other Home Depot supplies were used?  I'd run as fast as I could.
