Any value in a 1979 Mercury 150?
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:01:30 AM »
I'm starting a 20 CCP rebuild and about to remove the outboard.  It's original to the boat 1979 Mercury 150.  The PO kept it running, but just barely.  I'm trying to decide to sell it or scrap it.  Is there any value left in such an old motor.  The big diference is the care that I will take in removing it.

Thanks,

Michael

Your engine is an early V6, first introduced in '76, 122 cubic inch. No oil injection, 50:1 premix. If I remember, your engine still had the remote trim pump, mounted in the boat via hydraulic hoses to the trim cylinders. A very good engine in its day, they had lots of stator problems but the basic engine was bullet proof and made a very good race engine back in the day. In reality, it's worth more parted out than whole believe it or not. The gearcase, trim system (clunky but rare now) etc., if the engine is clean and still nicely original, Merc guys might be interested to put it on an old Glastron or performance boat to keep the hull and engine the same vintage. Put up some pictures and we can have a look. The older V6's haven't captured the following like the inline 6's before it. Just as a parts motor and if it's running with good compression I would say $1000 would be a decent price to the right guy who needs one.
1973 Aquasport 22-2, twin 115 Mercs
2000 Baycraft 175 flats boat, 60 Bigfoot Merc
1968 Boston Whaler 13, 25 Yamaha (project)
1966 Orlando Clipper 13, 9.9 Merc
